If you already have a health insurance license, you usually still need to complete your state-required Long-Term Care certification training before selling LTC products. Most states follow the NAIC/DRA model: an initial 8-hour course before you sell, solicit, or negotiate any LTC insurance, plus a 4-hour refresher every 24 months. But the details vary by state, and a handful of states have their own systems entirely. The table below lists each state's requirement.
Before you use the table, know these ground rules:
The training applies to all LTC sales, including LTC riders on life policies and linked-benefit products in most states.
Carriers enforce compliance, not the state. LTC carriers must verify your training before accepting business, and carriers have the final say on what training they accept. Forward completion certificates to every carrier you write with (many verify through ClearCert).
Refresher timing differs. Some states run the refresher clock 24 months from your course completion date; others tie it to your CE/license renewal cycle. The table notes which.
The "Original Four" (CA, CT, IN, NY) ran Partnership programs before the DRA. Their training is unique, and it is NOT reciprocal with any other state in either direction.

Selling in Multiple States?
Most NAIC/DRA states honor an 8-hour NAIC course taken in another state, but plan around these exceptions:
Supplement states: GA, MA, MN, SD, VT, VA, and WI require a state-specific Medicaid supplement on top of an out-of-state NAIC course.
The Original Four: CA, CT, IN, and NY training is not reciprocal with NAIC states in either direction — you must meet each of those states' requirements separately.
Short-course states: Kansas's 4-hour initial and 1-hour refresher, and Delaware's 3-hour courses, satisfy only that state. If you sell in multiple states, take the full 8-hour NAIC course.
Carriers decide: Even where a state grants reciprocity, individual carriers can require more. Always confirm with the carrier before submitting LTC business.
